Pride is about not giving up
It's Pride month, and we are off to a pretty brutal start.
In addition to the myriad court cases, violent arrests, and threats of violence that led up to the month, the FBI kicked it off with a tweet suggesting that people report trans health providers to them.
It's to be expected, given the current political environment, but that does not mean that you need to accept it. I'm not about to give you some pithy slogan that's lost any meaning. I want people to remember that their friends, families, and neighbors are actively in danger right now. Not just from the usual bigots, but from emboldened keyboard warriors, people cloaking their hate and fear in religion, and the government itself (even moreso than usual).
Show up for people. Be kind. And brave. Make sure that bigots know they are not welcome near you. Make sure your friends that are targeted know they can count on you (and not in some performative ally bullshit way where you cry about the harms they are facing). Don't normally go to Pride events? Show up anyways and be supportive.
People so desperately need community right now. Individually, we are all scared and in actual danger. But together, it's a little easier to be braver, to share some of the work, to learn skills from each other, to prop each other up when any one of us gets too burnt out. And Pride is an opportunity to do all that, while still finding joy, and ferocity, and hope.
