The lessons of Andor

The lessons of Andor
"Your theory of change does not match our theory of change"

There's a lot going on, and you all know how to read the news. I want to talk for a second about the futility of infighting, and the Left's tendency to become a circular firing squad. First, if you aren't watching Andor, you should, because even though it's flawed, it is one of the best representations I have seen of the various roles necessary for resistance, as well as the pitfalls of having a diversity of tactics and ideologies across a disparate group of people who do share common goals, but often get thwarted by ideological purity, lack of resources, paranoia, sloppiness, or exhaustion.

What the show illustrates well is the necessity for all these different parts - the funders, the politicians, the organizers, the army, the loners doing clandestine work, the people providing community support - and how hard it is to build trust without a monolith directing them, because everybody comes to both those specialized skills and their motivation for taking those risks for different reasons.

My hope is that we can all get out of our own way enough to let people do the jobs they are suited to, and know that we don't have to like them, much less agree with them all the time, in order to work together. It doesn't mean you don't hold people accountable for harmful actions, but it does mean that it is unproductive to spend time attacking your allies when you still have a much bigger, more dangerous, and more powerful common enemy.
