What happened before the National Guard showed up?

To watch the news right now, you would think that Los Angeles has been rioting like the second coming of Rodney King. Burning Waymos, clouds of tear gas, protesters flooding the 101, and now a group of National Guard deployed to secure a parking lot. But have you seen much in the way of coverage of what led up to that point? Because let me take you on a journey, friends.
There's a lot of info sublinked in here, and I really recommend clicking through where you can, especially when it comes to the protest coverage, because how this is being spun should terrify everybody.
On Thursday, June 5, ICE detained a number of immigrants who showed up for their check-in appointments, and detained them in the basement of the Roybal Federal Building.

The following day, Friday, June 6, a group of community members gathered outside the site of another ICE raid at Ambiance clothing, where SEIU President David Huerta was violently arrested, and later hospitalized for his injuries. During the departure, an ICE vehicle hit a protester, and then another bystander on a bicycle, before speeding away.

Later that day, a group of roughly 100 people peacefully protested outside the ICE detention center on Alameda in Downtown LA. LAPD, DHS, and CHP were all on site, began to slow kettle the crowd, then started deploying tear gas and flash bangs on the peaceful crowd.
Saturday, June 7, more ICE raids took place at the Paramount, CA Home Depot. Because apparently day laborers are the greatest threat to America being great again. The first post I have logged is from 2:32pm. Neighborhood residents came out to watch, and occasionally yell at ICE, and the ICE agents began firing smoke, teargas, and less than lethals at the neighborhood residents. Some of the ICE vehicles trying to leave the scene at full speed hit ANOTHER protester. (Which, incidentally, NOBODY HAS MENTIONED SINCE. Is that person alive? I have no idea. They were unconscious when carried out of the road.)
ICE fired so much tear gas that elderly people needed to leave their homes and lay down on the grass while waiting for medical attention. Neighborhood residents started trying to throw canisters back, and make barricades to protect themselves. This went on for another four hours. At it's largest, journalists on site were reporting maybe 100 people - who live in the neighborhood - most were just out there recording with their phones. What's more, in the last three days, dozens of journalists have been aggressively targeted and injured by the various arms of law enforcement while covering the protests. (Extremely graphic link to coverage).
This is what made them federalize the National Guard.
So what does that mean? Federalizing the National Guard? Well, what everybody was expecting was for Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act and declare Martial Law. Which also seems like a really extreme move for a handful of not even that large peaceful community protests that the cops turned into a violent photo op. But instead, the EO made use of an obscure statute that allows them to dance right up to the line of the Insurrection Act without having to use any of those scary words. AND they wrote it in such a way that it is open ended, and not restricted to California. In fact, it doesn't even mention California! So this can literally be put into effect anywhere in the country where people are protesting the government. Which is about to happen everywhere this Saturday.
Does that mean you shouldn't protest? Hell no. Just be careful. Be realistic about your own abilities, safety, and risk tolerance. Take precautions for your privacy and security (check our resources page for any guidance you might possibly need). And if you don't feel like you can protest, that is more than fine! You can help with mutual aid, resource distribution, or getting public safety information out to your community. You can help figure out what hotels ICE is staying at in your neighborhood and organize your community to contact the hotel like these heroes did.
